Can you tell what is the Google Play Store Rating Algorithm?

How the overall rating of an app is calculate?
Is there any formula for that on which the rating depends?

    Hi Ravi,
The list above is in order of ranking importance. The precise formula is of course not published by Google and changes frequently as does the Google Web algorithm to improve relevancy and stop people from hacking the algorithm.
I have done extensive research on the algorithm across many verified sources in order to get the app “workinfield“, ranking higher against competitiors.
I would suggest, as I have done, to go through the list each week and look at ways on who you can improve in each of the listed areas, the top ones of course being the ones where you should focus on the most.
    I hope that helps…

    Hi Daniel,

The list is pretty much helpful in order to understand the algo. But, I am struck at a point, Can you tell me if the daily installs of an app effect the ranking or is there a time period they use in order to monitor the ‘Downloads Growth’

and what if I add more than 5 times keyword in the description? will that effect the visibility on a negative way. As everyone in all the blogs have mentioned it to be 5 times keywords in the description.

Hi Vishnu, thank you for the question.
The rate of app installs is one of the biggest factors that influences your rank. The current algorithm takes into account the weighted average of the install rate over the trailing 4-7 days with the highest weight for the last day.
    I hope that helps…

  6. Daniel Shaw says

    8. November 2013 at 12:21

The keyword rate in the description is an important factor, but one of the least important. Personally I would keep it at 5, to ensure that it doesn’t look like “keyword stuffing”, and then focus my efforts on numbers 1 to 5 in my list.

    Thank you Daniel,
That was pretty much helpful for me. Can you please answer about the keyword count in the description?

Will building tired backlinks strategy will work for ASO? And as per your factors, first 6 factors cant be maximized by newly established startups, so how they can beat existing competitors?

    Hi Daniel

What would be the weight in terms of importance between reviews and app downloads?

I’m promoting an app, and looking at competitors in front and behind I can’t really find a pattern.

    Thanks

  10. Daniel Shaw says

    30. July 2014 at 16:02

Google obviously doesn’t make ranking algorithm public knowledge, but app developers have come to believe that the core current iteration works something like this:

Ranking = (# of installs weighted for the past few hours) + (# of installs weighted for the past few days) + REVIEWS (star rating + number of reviews) + Engagement (# of times app opened etc.) + Sales ($) in that order of weight, so to answer your question – it’s certainly number of downloads and engagement, first before reviews and number of purchases.

The google playstore ranking update is real-time apparently, as opposed to daily in 2013.

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your deep Insights related to Google Play Store Optimization.

Before 16 days, I just launched an Educational FREE Android APP (GPAT2016 by PHARMAPLUS INSTITUTE) to help Pharmacy People in India. And it has received very good response so far…as a New Free Learning Initiative.

However, I found that my APP does not show any results upon click of SIMILAR section of Play Store and further (strangely), my APP (GPAT2016) does not appear in the list of other GPAT APPS.

I am trying to find the actual reason for this issue on Play Store.
It would be very kind of you, to help us regarding this problem.
Awaiting your reply at the earliest possible.

    Manan,
    PHARMAPLUS TEAM.

    Hi Daniel,

I am running a Music App for a Very Big Client, my client wants to stop Brand Search campaign as organic would contribute install without spending money.

I am not able to convince him, that he should not pause Brand Campaign.

My thought is that if we stop brand search paid campaign in that case Our competitors would bid on our terms and this will also effect Universal App Campaign or in Our Rank on Play Store.

Please share your thought on this problem, whether we should pause Brand Paid campaign or not?

    Regards,
    Manish

Does Google consider/analyze customer reviews rather than consider star ratings only?
Are they using any AI techniques to analyze user reviews?

  23. Daniel Shaw says

    19. February 2018 at 12:28

Certainly. There is a whole algorithm and development team focused on using AI into how we rate apps, products & services. This starts with simple sentiment analysis and then goes into more detailed analysis such as length of rating text, natural language processing and more.

    Hi Daniel,
Good to see that you are still active on this post. This is a great post which covers almost everything. I have few doubts as detailed below
    1. Is there some major change in Google algorithm because I can see Apps like Facebook and Whatsapp down by 7-8 ranks in play store India and all the top spot is acquired by Video apps (OTT platform).
    2. Is it to safe to consider the priority order you mentioned in the blog because this is 2013 blog and Google must have made various changes since then?

  25. Daniel Shaw says

    19. March 2018 at 10:39

    Hi Rishabh,
Thank you very much for your kind words.
    1. Video, AI, NLP (natural language processing) apps have all been given priority since early 2017. As Facebook / WhatsApp are direct competitors of Google, this could also be a reason why their ranking is less than expected – as Google will favour independent or google apps first in every case.
    2. The basic reasoning behind the Google Play Store Ranking Algorithm remains the same, just as the ranking in the Google Index has since its early days, however, it’s safe to assume that following the priority order is a good way to go initially. Most of the new changes have been with “machine learning” algorithms that determine the probable popularity of the app and revenue generated for Google. This is of course for deeper discussion and a full blog post would need to be done to explain this more in depth.
    I hope that helps!

Is there any “app crawler” blocking causing this issue.

    Hello sir,
I did everything as mentioned above but I see very little or no improvement in ranking. Moreover, I found my app ranked on a few keywords that aren’t even mentioned in the description or title. What could be the reason for that?
